The staff and students at Widney Junior School have lived up to their vision ‘Inspiring a community where learning is irresistible, everyone is valued and success is limitless.’ Early this year Liz Formby went to meet the students and tell them all about what life is like living in the slums. She was bombarded with thought provoking and intelligent questions that demonstrated enquiring minds and a wish to help Brainhouse students have the means to a better education for themselves. The students committed there and then to support ACEF, saying “Widney School is about helping other people and we wanted to do that for Brainhouse”.
Very soon a whole school effort was underway with notes to parents, collection boxes in reception for plastic bowls, spoons and mugs. One Year 6 child commented “We have done the feeding bags and money because we want those children to be happy, healthy and enjoy school”.
The students made displays in the hall with a wonderful pictogram chart to mark out their progress. Staff, students and parents were encouraged to bake. A DVD afternoon was arranged and refreshments sold. Very soon the students had raised £140 – which will feed around 30 young people at Brainhouse for a month. A very precious gift indeed from these industrious young people.
When Robyn who is in year 4 was asked why she wanted to work so hard for our students her response was immediate ‘We all want to help the children at Brainhouse have a better life.’
